What’s the difference between salisbury steak & hamburger steak?

In case you were wondering, like I was…the difference between hamburger steak and Salisbury steak is fairly minimal but it’s all in the ingredients. Hamburger Steak is seasoned with just salt and pepper while Salisbury steak will have other ingredients mixed in, like onion, breadcrumbs and seasonings.

I grew up with this recipe, but my mother never referred to it as Salisbury steak. She just called it hamburger steak or occcasionally “Poor man’s steak”. But we didn’t really care what it was called, though. We just knew we loved it!

How to make slow cooker salisbury steak

In a bowl, mix the beef, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, onion soup mix and onions. You’re going to want to mix it just enough to combine all the ingredients together. If you over-mix, the patties may be tough or chewy.
Then, once you have it mixed, measure the mixture in ½ C amounts and form into patties.

Next, you’re going to fry your patties in a preheated skillet about 4-5 minutes on each side. I have a Presto Electric Skillet and it works great for this, but you can use whatever type skillet you have.

Note** – I put about a Tbsp of olive oil in my skillet before I put the patties in, but this step is totally optional. Unless your using extra lean meat, hamburger will usually make enough of it’s own grease.

Once the patties are browned, carefully stack them into your slow cooker, It’s ok to overlap them.

In a measuring cup or bowl, mix the gravy mix, cream of mushroom soup, water and drained mushrooms. Stir with a whisk or a fork to blend, then pour the gravy mixture on top of the patties, cover and cook on low for 5 – 6 hours.

Slow cooker salisbury steak makes a great freezer meal!

Slow cooker Salisbury steak makes a great freezer meal that you can make just by doubling the recipe! You can freeze them raw or go ahead and brown them.

If you choose to brown them, remove them from the skillet once they’re done and let them cool before putting them into the freezer bag or your freezer safe container.

If you choose to freeze them raw, lay them in the freezer bag (or container) in a single layer and freeze flat. Don’t lay one on top of the other, as they may lose the patty shape and you’ll have one big ball of frozen meat.

Slow cooker Salisbury steak is one of our favorite meals that we’ve added into our weekly rotation. It’s easy to make, cheap and delicious! I hope you give it a try and if you do, be sure to come back and leave me a comment! I’d love to know how you liked it! 🙂
