Holiday Season Budget Tips: How to Spend Less And Enjoy More

Create a holiday budget

One of the first steps to manage holiday spending is to establish a clear and realistic budget. This is probably one of the most important holiday season budget tips I can give you.

Start by listing all your anticipated holiday expenses, including gifts, decorations, travel, food, and entertainment. Assign specific amounts to each category, and be sure to stick to your budget throughout the season. A budget helps you stay organized and avoid impulse purchases.

Make a gift list

Before you start shopping for gifts, create a comprehensive list of all the people you plan to buy for. Include family, friends, co-workers, and anyone else you intend to give presents to. Having a list helps you stay focused and avoid buying unnecessary gifts. You can also set a spending limit for each person, ensuring that your gift-giving remains within your budget. As a matter of fact, this is IMPERATIVE for staying within your budget!

Decide on your budget amount per person and then look for gifts that fall under that amount. If you don’t do this, then you’re simply not budgeting.

For children, the 4 gift rule is a great way to cut down on unnecessary gifts, and it’s meaningful and practical.

The 4 gift rule is very simple: you get each of your children something they want, something they need, something to wear, and something to read. Depending on your kid’s age, you might ask for their input on some or all of these gifts, or you might choose them all yourself.

Shop smart!

When shopping for gifts, take advantage of sales, discounts, and online deals. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are excellent opportunities to find discounted items. Price comparison apps and websites can help you find the best deals, and don’t forget to use cash back or rewards programs to save even more.

Two of my personal favorites are FETCH and Rakuten.

DIY gifts

Consider making homemade gifts for your loved ones. Handmade gifts are not only thoughtful and personal but can also be more cost-effective than store-bought items. Ideas for DIY gifts include homemade candles, baked goods, knitted scarves, fleece blankets or even a personalized photo album. Get creative and put your skills to good use.

Plan your holiday meals

Holiday meals can be a significant part of your holiday spending. Plan your menus carefully and create a shopping list to avoid impulse purchases at the grocery store. Consider hosting potluck dinners where each guest brings a dish, or opt for less expensive ingredients and recipes that can serve a larger group.

Embrace minimalism with decor

Instead of splurging on extravagant holiday decorations, opt for a minimalist approach. Use what you already have and focus on simple, timeless pieces. DIY decorations are also a great way to save money and add a personal touch to your holiday decor. You can also go for a more natural approach by using items you can find outside. Magnolia leaves and branches make gorgeous natural decor as well as pine cones, pine branches, etc.

This year, I’m going to refrain from buying anything new as I have several bins of holiday decorations that I’ve collected over many years. I also like to shop my home for everyday items that can be repurposed into holiday decor.

Avoid last minute (panic) shopping

Last-minute shopping often leads to rushed decisions and overspending. Start your holiday shopping early to have more time to find the best deals and thoughtful gifts. You’ll also avoid the stress of crowded stores and shipping delays that can come with procrastination.

Track your spending…please!

Throughout the holiday season, keep a close eye on your spending to ensure you’re staying within your budget. Use a spreadsheet, budgeting app or even a pen and paper to record all your expenditures. Regularly reviewing your expenses will help you identify areas where you can cut back.

Save on wrapping!

Gift wrapping can be expensive if you opt for store-bought wrapping paper and accessories. Consider using recycled materials like newspapers, brown paper, or fabric to wrap your gifts. You can also get creative with personalized DIY gift wrapping ideas.

Here are some creative and budget-friendly gift wrapping ideas:

  1. Brown Paper and Twine: Plain brown kraft paper is affordable and versatile. You can wrap gifts in brown paper and add a simple twine or ribbon for a rustic and minimalist look. Decorate with natural elements like sprigs of pine or holly.
  2. Newspaper: Reuse old newspapers as wrapping paper. The black and white print can create a unique and artsy appearance. You can also use colored markers to draw custom designs or messages on the newspaper.
  3. Fabric Wraps: Consider using fabric remnants or scarves to wrap gifts. This not only looks beautiful but also provides an additional gift (the fabric) that can be repurposed by the recipient.
  4. DIY Stamps: Create your own stamps using carved potatoes or erasers. Dip the stamp in paint and decorate plain paper or fabric with unique patterns and designs.
  5. Paper Bags: Brown or white paper bags can be upcycled as gift wrap. Decorate them with stamps, markers, or stickers for a personalized touch.
  6. Dollar Tree: Check out Dollar Tree for adorable, inexpensive wrapping paper. It may not be super high quality, but it’ll get the job done.

Set up a gift exchange game

If your family or group of friends typically exchange gifts, suggest setting limits or implementing a Secret Santa or white elephant gift exchange. With a spending cap or a one-gift-per-person rule, you can reduce the financial burden of buying for everyone. This way, you can focus on finding one meaningful gift rather than multiple smaller ones.

These games can add an element of surprise and make gift-giving more enjoyable while keeping spending in check.

rules for a white elephant gift exchange:

Each participant supplies one wrapped gift, usually of similar value. The gifts are placed in a central location, and participants determine in which order (often by numbers randomly drawn prior to the start of the game) they will take turns selecting a gift. The first person opens a wrapped gift, and the turn ends. On subsequent turns, each person has the choice to either unwrap a new present or to steal another’s. When a person’s gift is stolen, that person can either choose another wrapped gift to open or can steal from another player. Each gift can only be stolen twice per game. The game is over when everyone has a present. At the end, the first player may, if desired, steal any gift – according to some rules, even a gift that is out of play.

rules for a secret santa gift exchange:
  • Make sure every person draws one name. (And double check that everyone’s name got put in the hat—you don’t want someone to be left out!)
  • Set a gift budget for everyone to follow.
  • Stick to the gift budget! Don’t bring a $50 item if the gift giving budget has been set at $25.
  • Show up to the party. If you don’t, someone won’t get their gift and you won’t get yours!
  • Have everyone open their gifts one at a time. It can also be fun to see if the recipients can guess the identity of their Secret Santa.
  • Be grateful when receiving your gift, even if it’s something you don’t particularly care for. Be gracious and just say “Thank you!

Opt for “experience” gifts

Instead of physical gifts, consider giving experiences like concert tickets, spa vouchers, cooking classes or season passes to the city zoo or a local theater group. Experience gifts can be more memorable and often cost less than tangible items.

Shop second hand (thrifting)

Thrift stores, consignment shops, and online marketplaces offer a treasure trove of gifts and decorations that can be more budget-friendly than brand-new items. Shopping second-hand not only helps you save money but also contributes to sustainability by giving pre-loved items a new life. You may find unique and vintage gifts that carry sentimental value for your loved ones. Plus, it’s an excellent way to reduce the environmental impact of holiday shopping while keeping your wallet happy.

Re-gift thoughtfully

If you have unused or gently used items that are in good condition and would be appreciated by someone else, consider regifting them. Just be sure to do so thoughtfully and avoid regifting within the same circle of friends or family where the original gift came from.

Give the gift of time

Offer your time and help as a gift to loved ones. This could mean babysitting, assisting with household chores, or providing tech support. Offering your time and expertise can be a valuable and budget-friendly gift.

Implement a no-gift policy

If your budget is really tight, discuss with your family or close friends the idea of forgoing traditional gift exchanges altogether. Instead, you can focus on spending quality time together, sharing meals, and making the holiday season about the joy of togetherness.

This is something we started implementing years ago with our siblings. When the families began to grow, gifting started to become extremely expensive. Now, we don’t worry about gift giving and we get together for food, fun, fellowship and making precious memories!

Look for free or low cost activities

Plan holiday activities that don’t require significant spending, such as visiting local light displays, participating in community events, or enjoying a cozy night in with friends and family. These activities can create special memories without straining your budget.

Some other fun ideas may be:

  • Make a gingerbread house
  • Drive around and look at Christmas lights
  • Have holiday movie nights
  • Go caroling
  • Attend holiday performances at schools
  • Make your own ornaments or Paper Bag Snowflakes
  • Have a slumber party under the Christmas tree
  • Bake melt in your mouth sugar cookies or cake mix cookies
  • Take your kids to the mall and let them sit on Santa’s lap (and take your own pics if allowed.)
  • Have a craft night & let your kids create one of a kind ornaments or gifts

There are so many things to do that hardly cost anything and create wonderful family memories. Just get a little creative.

Reevaluate your traditions

Take a critical look at your holiday traditions and see if there are any that are particularly expensive or not bringing you joy. It’s okay to let go of traditions that no longer serve you, especially if they have a significant financial impact.

Give hand written cards

Instead of purchasing expensive greeting cards, opt for handwritten notes or homemade cards. Personal messages can be just as touching as store-bought cards.

Be mindful of shipping cost

If you’re ordering gifts online, be aware of shipping costs, which can add up quickly. Look for deals that offer free shipping or consider consolidating your orders to save on shipping fees.

Save, save, save throughout the year!

Consider setting up a holiday savings fund that you contribute to throughout the year. This will help spread the financial burden and ensure you have enough money set aside for holiday expenses when the season arrives.

Ask for help

If you’ve tried everything else but still can make ends meet this holiday season, reach out to friends and/or family for help. There’s no shame in asking if you’re truly struggling. And if asking friends & family isn’t an option, there are several organizations that can offer assistance. Here’s a post from Free Financial Help Christmas Assistance Programs.with several organizations that offer help to those that are struggling.
