Why You’ll Love This Easy Hamburger Steak With Gravy Recipe

  • Budget-Friendly: Made with ground beef and pantry staples, this meal is as affordable as it is tasty.
  • Simple Ingredients: No fancy or hard-to-find ingredients—just good, wholesome food.
  • Quick & Easy: Ready in about 30 minutes, making it perfect for busy weeknights.
  • Comfort Food at Its Best: A rich, savory brown gravy poured over tender hamburger steaks—what’s not to love?

Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1 pound ground beef/chuck (80/20 or 85/15 for best flavor)
  • 1 pkg. onion soup mix (the dry kind)
  • Prepackaged brown gravy (any brand will work)
  • Worstcheshire sauce
  • Butter
  • Small onion

Instructions

Prepare the Hamburger Steaks
  • In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef and the onion soup mix. Use your hands to combine everything without overmixing (overmixing can make the patties tough).
  • Shape the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties, slightly flattening them slightly for even cooking.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Then, add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Drain/remove any excess grease from the skillet.
sautee the onions

Now, this part is totally optional, but if you like sautéed onions, they pair wonderfully with this meal. They’re so easy and they just take the meal up a notch or two.

Slice up a whole onion (sometimes I do two) so you have rings. Melt about 2 Tbsp. butter in a skillet and add the onion. Stir the onions frequently until they begin to brown on the edges. Don’t overcook, as they will get mushy if overdone. Once they’re done, set them aside. These will be used to serve over the hamburger steak.

Make the Gravy

While your hamburger Steaks are cooking, now’s the time to make your gravy. Using a prepackaged gravy will save you a ton of time and it’s really just as good as homemade…less the effort. I use the cheapest brown gravy I can find. Usually, that’s the store brand but if you have a preference, by all means…use that! If you’d like to take the cheap gravy up a notch, add 1 Tbsp of Worcestershire sauce to it to give it a little kick.

Once your gravy is done, pour it over your hamburger steaks while they’re still on the stove. Then simmer for about 3 – 5 minutes.

Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles for a super delicious, comforting meal. If you make the sautéed onions, top each patty with before you serve. They really add a wonderful flavor to this meal.

Frugal Tips & Substitutions

  • Stretch the Meal: Add mushrooms to the gravy for extra texture and flavor without extra cost. (Canned mushrooms work great!)
  • Make It Ahead: This dish reheats beautifully! Double the recipe and freeze individual portions for easy future meals.

Final Thoughts

This easy hamburger steak with gravy is proof that frugal meals don’t have to be boring or bland. With just a handful of simple ingredients, you can serve up a delicious, home-cooked meal that your family will love, all without breaking the bank. It’s comfort food at its finest, bringing back that old-fashioned charm of stretching a dollar while still eating well.
