Cabbage and Noodles Recipe- Haluski
This fantastically simple cabbage and noodles recipe (Haluski) is a delectable treat that combines a few inexpensive ingredients, but delivers a huge punch to your taste buds! It comes together so quickly and is easy enough for the beginner cook.
A friend gave me this recipe over 30 years ago and it’s was one of those favorite, comfort food type recipes that the whole family loved!
Haluski is an old Polish recipe that can have a few variations. Some make it with potato dumplings, while others make it like this version with the egg noodles and cabbage.
I’m not Polish, but I remember my German grandmother making a dish very similar to this. No matter what the ethnicity, it’s a darn good dish! It can be made as a side dish, like below and it can also be made as a main meal. Adding bacon or sausage makes it an awesome, complete meal that will have your family going back for seconds!

Cabbage and Noodles (Haluski) recipe
Let’s make it!
Your basic ingredients for cabbage and noodles are one head of cabbage, one package of egg noodles, one stick of butter, a small onion (not shown), salt and pepper.
Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the egg noodles and cook according to package directions. While you’re waiting on the noodles, chop the cabbage, like below. I like my cabbage chopped a little finer. I believe I chopped it a little more, after I snapped the below pic. It’s just a matter of personal preference.
Take that small onion and chop it up, as well. I put mine in this nifty little vegetable chopper that I got from Amazon. I love this thing! It chops the onion fine and because it uses manual chopping, you can get some frustrations out, to boot! That’s a bonus! Lol!!

Take about 1/2 the stick of butter and melt it in a skillet. Add the onion and saute it for 3-4 minutes. Add the cabbage and cook it until it’s tender…about 10-12 minutes. Personally, I like my cabbage to start to brown, just a little, but be careful to not overcook. It will get mushy.
Combine everything!
Once the cabbage is done, drain your noodles and stir the cabbage into the noodles. Add the other half of the butter stick by cutting it into little pats, for quicker melting. Salt and pepper to taste and serve!
Tips:
- Don’t overcook the noodles. If anything, take a minute or two off the package cooking time.
- If you want to add bacon to this recipe, use 5-6 slices of well cooked bacon. It’s better if the bacon is very crispy. Chop or break it up and sprinkle over and mix it into the pot. (If you cook the bacon in a skillet, you can use some of the drippings to saute the cabbage with, in place of the butter.)
- This can be made into a full meal by adding cooked sausage, sliced thin, to the recipe or the sausage can also be cooked with the onion, prior to adding the cabbage.
- For a little healthier version, use olive oil, instead of butter, to saute the cabbage and onion.
