Bidet Attachment Benefits: Superior Personal Hygiene and Better Comfort

Ah, the timeless pursuit of personal hygiene – a journey that has seen humanity evolve from using water and leaves to the modern luxury of soft, quilted toilet paper. But amidst this evolution, one fixture has remained steadfast: the bidet attachment. There are so many advantages and benefits of using a bidet attachment that I thought it was worth writing a blog post about it.

It was just a few years ago when toilet paper shortages were actually a thing. Do you remember that? I could’ve never imagined (maybe in my wildest dreams) that stores would be totally wiped out of toilet paper! But…alas! It happened! People were hoarding it like it was some rare and valuable commodity and paying exhorbant amounts that they normally wouldn’t pay.

Because of that, the bidet (attachment) has experienced a surge in popularity, particularly in regions where its use was once as rare as a unicorn sighting. And, let’s face it, with all the toilet paper hoarding antics of the recent past, maybe it’s time to consider an alternative that doesn’t require a frantic trip to the store during a pandemic.

In this blog post, we’ll delve into the benefits and advantages of using a bidet attachment  and hopefully shed a little light on the various reasons they’re becoming increasingly popular and why you should consider one for your home. Maybe it’s time to bid farewell to outdated hygiene practices and embrace a cleaner, greener, and downright comfier way of doing things. After all, why wipe when you can wash?

Unlocking the Benefits: The Advantages of a Bidet Attachment

We are recent bidet converts. It was a little over a year ago when we decided to bite the bullet and give this mysterious little bathroom fixture a try. We have several family members that have been on the bidet bandwagon for many years and I’ve listened to how wonderful they are for a long time. Like most of you, I was skeptical. It was kind of like a fear of the unknown.

But, we finally said “What the heck!” They’re relatively inexpensive, so if we didn’t like it, we could just not use it or even remove it completely. I ordered a bidet attachment on Amazon (Luxe Bidet NEO 185) that had great reviews and my hubby installed it. So, all I have to say about it is it’s life changing! So much so, that we put one in our guest bathroom, (Veken Ultra Slim) as well! I really can’t come up with any disavantages to this little device. It’s very affordable, eco friendly, better for your plumbing and better for your wallet!

So, if you’d like to know more advantages and benefits of having a bidet, just read on:

What is a bidet?

A traditional bidet (pronounced buh-day) is a plumbing fixture that is installed as a separate unit in the bathroom besides a toilet, shower and sink, which users have to straddle. Some bidets resemble a large hand basin, with taps and a stopper so they can be filled up. Other designs, like the one I’m referring to in this blog post, attach to the toilet and have a nozzle that squirts a jet of water to aid in cleansing.

A bidet attachment typically connects to the existing water supply of a toilet via the addition of a threaded tee pipe adapter, and requires no soldering or other plumbing work.

A bidet attachment take up very little space, unlike a traditional bidet, offering availability to anyone with with indoor plumbing. You can enjoy the benefits of a bidet no matter what size the bathroom.

History of the bidet

The earliest known version of the bidet is believed to have originated in France in the late 17th century. The word “bidet” itself is derived from the French word for pony, as early versions of the bidet were designed to be straddled, much like one would straddle a pony. From France, the bidet quickly gained popularity in other European countries, particularly Italy and Spain. It became a fixture in aristocratic households and eventually spread to middle-class homes across the continent.

Over time, the design and functionality of the bidet evolved. Early versions were standalone fixtures resembling a low, basin-like bowl. In the 20th century, bidet attachments and combined toilet-bidet units were introduced, offering more compact and space-saving options. While bidets remained popular in Europe, they were relatively unknown in other parts of the world until more recently. In countries like Japan and South Korea, advanced electronic bidet seats, known as washlets, became commonplace in households and public restrooms.

In recent years, bidets have gained traction in countries outside of their traditional strongholds, including the United States and Canada. Growing awareness of the benefits of bidets, such as improved hygiene, environmental sustainability, and health benefits, has contributed to their increasing popularity worldwide.

Bidets offer Superior Hygiene

The primary advantage of bidets lies in their ability to provide superior cleanliness compared to toilet paper. While toilet paper can effectively remove solid waste, it often leaves behind residue. This can lead to irritation, discomfort, and even bacterial buildup. Bidets, on the other hand, utilize a gentle stream of water to cleanse the perineal area,. This ensures a more thorough and hygienic clean. Not only does it enhance personal comfort but also reduces the risk of skin irritation and infection.

Bidets are Eco-Friendly

Beyond personal hygiene, bidets offer significant environmental benefits. The production and disposal of toilet paper contribute to deforestation, water pollution, and energy consumption. Bidets, however, use minimal water to accomplish their task, making them a more eco-conscious choice. Some modern bidets even come with water-saving features, such as adjustable pressure and temperature settings, further reducing water usage. By opting for a bidet, individuals can make a positive impact on the environment while maintaining optimal hygiene.

Cost Savings abound with Bidets

While the initial cost of installing a bidet may seem like a small investment, it can lead to substantial long-term savings. By reducing reliance on toilet paper, individuals can save money on purchasing it, as well as on maintenance costs related to unclogging toilets due to excessive paper usage. The cost of a bidet attachment is minute compared with what you will save in toilet paper cost. The savings makes it an extremely effective &  financially prudent choice in the long run.

Bidets offer Enhanced Comfort

Bidets are designed with user comfort in mind, offering customizable features such as water temperature and pressure controls. Some models even include additional features like heated seats and air dryers, providing a more luxurious and comfortable bathroom experience. This added comfort can be particularly beneficial for individuals with sensitive skin or those living in colder climates.

For us personally, we are very satisfied with a ‘cold water only’ bidet. The cost of installation for a bidet that offers a warm water option was not worth it for us. We have well-water and while it is cold, you get used to it very quickly.

Health Benefits of a bidet

Beyond hygiene and comfort, a bidet attachment offers health benefits, especially for individuals with specific medical conditions. Those who suffer from hemorrhoids, constipation, or sensitive skin can benefit from using a bidet. The gentle cleansing action of a bidet can reduce irritation and promote healing. For seniors or individuals with mobility issues, bidets offer a convenient and hygienic way to maintain personal hygiene, enhancing overall well-being.

Convenience and Accessibility with Bidets

Bidets are designed to be user-friendly and accessible to individuals of all ages and abilities. Many modern bidet models come with intuitive controls, including wireless remote controls, making them suitable for people with mobility issues. Seniors, in particular, find bidets to be a convenient and hygienic way to maintain personal hygiene.

Reduced Plumbing Issues with Bidets

Toilet paper can contribute to plumbing problems when it clogs pipes and septic systems. A bidet attachment significantly reduce the likelihood of such issues as they rely on water for cleaning rather than paper. This not only saves you from potential plumbing repairs but also the frustration of dealing with backups.

Aesthetic Appeal of Bidets

Beyond their functional benefits, bidet attachments can elevate the aesthetics of your bathroom. Modern bidet attachment designs often blend seamlessly with contemporary bathroom decor, to the point that you really don’t even notice that they’re there.

It’s Time to Bid Farewell to Old Hygiene Habits

In conclusion, one thing is abundantly clear: WE LOVE OUR BIDETS!

A bidet attachment offers a host of advantages and benefits that make them an appealing alternative to traditional methods of personal hygiene. From superior cleanliness to environmental sustainability, cost savings, and comfort levels that rival sinking into a fluffy cloud after a long day, bidets and bidet attachments have a lot to offer. And the best part is the next time this country has a toilet paper shortage, you probably won’t even notice. 🙂

    1. Hi Lavonda! Not a crazy question. Take a small amount of TP and pat dry. Doesn’t take much. That’s what I prefer, but my husband prefers to air or drip dry. 🙂
