Best Things To Buy In September
September has got to be one of my favorite months. In some ways, it feels like January…like a fresh start. Summer’s over, kids are back in school, the promise of cooler weather is on the horizon and it’s time to get back into a normal swing of things.
It’s also a great time to hit some major sales and score with great prices on so many items! Retailers are itching to move out summer inventory and if you may be in the market for any of these items, now’s your chance to save a lot of money.
Here’s a great list of the best things to buy in September!

Best Things To Buy In September!
Mattresses & Linens
If your mattress is in need of replacing, Labor Day sales kick off the action early in September. This is one of two times a year when mattress retailers offer deep discounts on piled-up inventory. Memorial Day is another prime time to save. You may also find some better-than-normal deals on bedding and bath supplies such as towels over Labor Day weekend and throughout the month.
Airfare
September promises low prices on flights for the upcoming holidays. The best deals on plane tickets usually surface about eight weeks before the departure date. For Thanksgiving, that would mean the last week or two of September, but start looking for cheap tickets and convenient times now if you hope to travel during what is usually a very busy season. This is one area that it really pays to shop early!
Appliances
September is a good month to buy large appliances like washers, dryers, dishwashers and stoves. New models for the upcoming year will be hitting showrooms soon and retailers are eager to sell off the older stock. These appliances are brand new, perfectly functional and the new models don’t change that much from one year to the next. It’s all about changing out the old inventory to the new, so waiting until now and opting for last year’s model will save you some serious cash!
Some stores, such as Lowe’s, even offer free delivery during their Labor Day sale.
Summer Gear
Discounts on lawn mowers, grills, swimsuits, and other summer gear will deepen in September. Sales on yard decor and outdoor furniture also heat up this month and continue into October. But don’t wait too long to snatch a deal — the selection could be thin.
School Supplies
Once most students have started classes, school supplies start going for lower prices. This includes big-ticket items such as desktop computers and many Apple products. Selection may not be what it was in August, but shoppers won’t beat the prices in September.

Plants
Summer plants, trees, and shrubs can be picked up for dirt-cheap prices this month, because garden centers are stocking up on fall and holiday plants. September is a great month to fill out landscaping with perennials and with Summer plants at rock-bottom prices, there’s still some time to enjoy them.
In Season Produce
This is the last chance to enjoy low prices on summer produce such as corn (my local grocer is currently offering 8 ears/$1.00), peaches, plums, nectarines, peppers, mangoes, green beans, lettuce, and tomatoes. September will also see the first fall produce hit grocery stores. Look for great prices on apples, berries, beets, cantaloupes, cauliflower, eggplants, grapes & more!
Many vegetables & fruits can also be frozen so you can enjoy Summer produce anytime!

Bikes
In general, people use their bikes less when the temps begin to drop. That’s why Fall is a great time to snag a good deal on a bike. Retailers are needing to make room for other seasonal merchandise. Also, bikes make great Christmas gifts!
TV’S
September is the perfect month to get a great deal on a TV, especially a 32-inch one! 32 inches is the perfect size for a dorm room or a small studio apartment!
What Not To Buy In September
- Fall & winter clothing – Wait until end of season, usually the first of the year.
- Halloween costumes – Definitely wait until right after Halloween.
- Camping/hiking equipment – Usually, October is when these items go on sale.
- Toys – Black Friday & Cyber Monday will score you the best deals.
- Big screen TV’s – (Larger than 32″) Amazon & Best Buy will have some impressive deals, usually in November.
I’m not saying to rush out and spend money on these things because they may be on sale, but if you’re in the market for some of these items or you know you may be needing them next season anyway, now is a good time to purchase them at a discounted price and save some money.
