Best things to buy in July
Summer apparel
By the time July gets here, swimsuits, tank tops, shorts and flip-flops have been out on the floor for several weeks. Now’s the time to start looking for the end of season sales. You should start seeing summer sales & discounts on most summer apparel and accessories.
Right now, it’s the beginning of the ‘end of season’ sales and you have a good chance that there’s still a good selection. Also, watch for coupons as some of your major clothing retailers like Macy’s, Kohls, Old Navy and JC Penney sometimes offer 20-60% off your purchase.
Online sites like RetailMeNot.com also offer tons of coupon codes to just about every clothing retailer you can think of.
Patriotic items
Each year, as we get closer to July 4th, we see sales on just about everything that is red, white & blue, along with the ole’ stars & stripes!
You can expect to see discounts on clothing, party supplies & home decor. The better deals happen close to the holiday, including the weekend of, but it you really want to score the best deals, wait until after the holiday! Retailers will be marking down the red, white & blue merchandise to make room for Fall inventory.
Outdoor gear
July is when outdoor retailers begin having sales to make sure that their summertime wares are gone (or at least thinned out) before the weather starts cooling off. You’ll see a lot of these sales pop up during Fourth of July week, but will most like carry through to the end of the month or until it’s gone.
Look for bargains on hiking boots, fishing gear, outdoor wear, rugged sandals, coolers, backpacks, bicycles, helmets, kayaks and even more!
Tools
Summertime is a great time to catch up on so many home improvement projects!
With Father’s Day long gone, all those Father’s Day gifts that didn’t get purchased will be on sale this month, which is great for all of you DIYers that are wanting to dive into DIY projects during a long holiday weekend and for those people that are having ‘Staycations’ this summer and looking for things to do!
Paint
Speaking of home improvement projects, summer is the best time to paint your house! Not only because the weather tends to be dryer, but this is the time when you can find the best prices on paint!
The large home improvement retailers (like Lowe’s, Home Depot, etc.) almost always put their paint on sale in the summer months and more specifically around summer holidays (weekend of Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day). Look for price reductions of $5-$25.
If you prefer retailers like Sherwin Williams, keep an eye out every few months for them to put their paint and paint supplies on sale at a reduction of 30-40%.
Furniture
July is a good month to shop for furniture. New models arrive every February and August, so the best deals (on outgoing models) are available in January and July, with some great sales happening around the July 4th weekend.
As for outdoor furniture, you’ll generally see the best sales between the Fourth of July and Labor Day. New outdoor furniture usually hits retail floors between the middle of March and the middle of April and most stores are looking to clear out their stock by end of July and into August.
Mattresses
Holiday weekends are usually a great time to get a pretty good deal on mattresses. Those holidays include Fourth of July, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day and Black Friday.
Shopper can expect to save 10-20% during a holiday promotion sale, so if you’ve been putting it off, now might be the perfect chance to score a deal and sleep like a baby!
Air conditioners
It may seem impossible to think that air conditioners would be on ‘best things to buy in July’ list, but think again! July will begin with some awesome holiday sales. Even though most of the country is needing their AC’s, in the retail world things are beginning to move toward the Fall and cooler temps. That means you should be seeing some deals as retailers are looking to clear out summer inventories.
The deals will be there if you NEED an AC ASAP, but if you can hang on until Fall, you’ll see the biggest price decreases. Only problem is you may not see a large inventory.

School supplies
Summer is half over by now. That means it’s already a good time to be looking ahead for the upcoming back to school sales. They’ll be starting this month, but closer to the end of the month.
Look for bargains on supplies like backpacks, lunch boxes, markers & notebooks. The college crowd will be heading to school a little earlier than other kids, so be sure to also keep an eye out for sales on big ticket items like laptops, bedding & small appliances.
Jewelry
July is a great time to get some awesome deals on jewelry! The summer months tend to be very sluggish in the jewelry industry, with Valentine’s Day & Mother’s Day long gone. The next major holiday for jewelry sales isn’t until Christmas. This means jewelry retailers will be enticing prospective buyers in to keep sales afloat.
In-season produce
July is basically the peak of summer, making it the perfect time to stock up on fresh fruits and veggies. Look for the ripest fruits to include apricots, blackberries, blueberries, cantaloupe, kiwi, mangoes, peaches, plums, raspberries, strawberries, and watermelon. You’ll also find a plethora of fresh veggies on sale! This includes corn, cucumbers, green beans, kohlrabi, lettuce, okra, peppers, summer squash, Swiss chard, tomatoes, and zucchini.
Some (or most) of these fruits and vegetables freeze well, so take advantage of the sales and stock up!

Hot dogs
If you’re a hot dog lover, don’t miss National Hot Dog Day on July 20, 2022. Many national restaurants and hot-dog chains will be celebrating by offering discounted or free hot dogs, perfect for summer parties & celebrations.
Ice cream
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month & the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day. So, this year’s Ice Cream Day is Sunday, July 21, 2024.
Look for some ice cream shops to offer free or discounted treats. You’ll usually be able to find promotional announcements and coupons on social media.
Also, look for deals at Baskin Robbins, Burger King, Dairy Queen and many more!
What not to buy in July:
Fall clothing
July is when you start seeing fall clothing hit retailers’ sites and shelves. Wait until after Labor Day for fall fashions to start being reduced.
Grills
We all know July is grilling season, but it’s NOT ‘Buy Grill’ season! You’ll be able to get the best deals AFTER grilling season, which is the end of summer. Keep your eyes open for Labor Day sales.
Appliances
Labor Day is the best time to buy major appliances. Many manufacturers launch their latest models in September or October. This means they’ll be looking to move out last years inventory beginning sometime toward the end of August.
ONLY BUY IF YOU’RE ALREADY IN THE MARKET…
Like I always say in each of these “Best things to buy” posts…don’t rush out and spend money on these things because they may be on sale. But if you’re in the market for some of these items or you know you may be needing them next season anyway, mid summer may be a good time to go over the “best things to buy in July” list and save some money!.
