Best Things To Buy In February
February might be a short month, but it’s certainly not short on great deals! There are 3 major events that take place in February. We start off with the Super Bowl on February 11th, Valentines Day on the February 14 and Presidents Day on February 19th. All 3 of these celebratory events mean that retailers will be offering huge February sales! I’ve done a little research and have come up with a great list of the best things to buy in February as well as what you need to skip this month.
So, without further adieu, here’s my list of the best (and worst) things to buy in the month of February.

The best things to buy in february
Furniture & major appliances
January is typically the month to snag great deals on furniture, but most retailers will extend their sales into February, all the way up to the Presidents Day weekend.
If your needing new appliances, you’ll definitely see deep discounts on refrigerators, dishwashers, washers and dryers, ovens, and more.
Tv’s
The biggest football game of the year is happening this month and retailers will be offering discounts at (almost) Black Friday prices. Presidents Day weekend is the 3rd weekend in February and this will usually yield some really good prices on TV’s.
The Consumer Electronics Show took place in January, which is the release of the latest & greatest tech products, so retailers are looking to move out last years models on TV’s and most electronic gadgets. There should be plenty of competition, so be sure to shop around and see who has the best prices. Check out Walmart, Best Buy, Target and even Amazon!
mattresses
President Day sales & mattress sales are almost synonymous with each other, it seems! This signifies the end of winter and that means the start of next year’s mattress season. New stock begins arriving in February and March, so stores need to make room on the sales floor. You’ll find deals around 30% off, even on top brands.
Some retailers, like JC Penney will cut mattresses 20% -50% off PLUS another 10% when you use a coupon.
Some Presidents Day mattress sales may begin as early as the first week of February, so keep your eyes open. You can also expect to see discounts on all mattress types, bedding, pillows, bed frames, weighted blankets, and more.
If you’re in need of a mattress or just looking to upgrade, this is the time to do it!
tax software
The early bird catches the worm…so to speak. The best time to purchase tax software would be now. The closer it gets to the filing deadline, the more you may pay. Typically, the manufacturers will start bumping their prices up as we get closer to April 15th. So, if you’re on the fence or tend to procrastinate when it comes to tax filing, sooner will save you some money. Look for coupon codes that can save you up to $20-30.
prom dresses
Spring is just around the corner. That means that new dress designs are getting ready to be released for the upcoming season. Buying prom dresses now will save some cash and will also ensures that you have plenty of time to make alterations if you need to.
Valentine’s Day items
Valentine’s Day decor, candy, baking items, cards, chocolate & everything red, pink or white! All this stuff goes on sale AFTER February 14th at super deep discounts, so be sure to hit the clearance aisles and stock up for next year the last half of the month! Easter is right around the corner and you can stock up for the Easter baskets!
winter attire
February is usually the month when retailers start to clear out their winter apparel to make room for new, spring inventory. This means you can find huge clearance savings on jackets, gloves, hats, boots, and a lot more for everyone in the family!
cameras
Remember the Consumer Electronic Show that took place in January? I mentioned it above. This goes for other tech-y gadgets, besides TVs. With the release of the new models in January & February, you should be able to find some really great prices on older model cameras, this month.
weddings
We all know that peak wedding season is from May to September. That also means peak pricing. If you really want to save (a small fortune) on your wedding, get married in the late Fall or in the Winter. Everything from venues to wedding attire to wedding services will be much more negotiable during the off season.
humidifiers
Humidifiers are a popular item during the Fall & Winter months as the cold really starts to set in. Even though most of the country is still dealing with super low temperatures in February, retailers start putting humidifiers & air purifiers on sale with pretty deep discounts.
Did you know that by increasing the humidity inside your house with a humidifier, you can make it feel warmer than it actually is? The added moisture that a humidifier provides will increase your indoor heat index so that 68 degrees feels more like 78. That can add up to a significant savings on your heating bill & that alone definitely makes this little appliance one of THE best things to buy in February!
Here’s a great article on why your heater and a humidifier go hand in hand during the winter.
in season produce
Even though it’s still cold out, there are many different kinds of fruits & vegetables that are in season for February. Look for great sales on: apples, asparagus, avocados, beets, blueberries, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, Chilean grapes, grapefruit, leeks, lemons, limes, mandarin oranges, onions, pears, pomegranates, potatoes, spinach, sweet potatoes, turnips & winter squash.

february is also:
National Snack Food Month – Thanks to the Super Bowl, we will see sales on snack foods like tortilla chips, potatoes chips, dips, crackers, Rotel & Velveeta.
National Hot Breakfast Month – Watch for sales on grits, oatmeal, cream of wheat, frozen waffles, frozen pancakes, syrup, sausage biscuits, bacon, cinnamon rolls, hash browns & frozen breakfast sandwiches.
National Canned Food Month – stock up on canned vegetables, canned fruit, soups, canned meat (i.e. tuna & chicken) & canned pie filling.
Chinese New Year – Asian foods like egg rolls, dumplings & rice.
WHAT NOT TO BUY IN february:
patio furniture
I always get the itch to clean up and upgrade my outdoor spaces at the first hint of Spring, but this is definitely not the best time to do that. If you want the best deals on patio furniture, it’s best to wait until the Fall (September) when the summer is over and temps begin to drop. That’s also when outdoor furniture prices will too.
spring attire
It’s kinda common sense to hold off on newly released items until the season has passed and apparel is no different. Grab the Spring releases around May/June. You’ll still have plenty of time to get a lot of wear from them.
gym memberships
January is always the best time to score reduced membership prices. By February, the “new year’s resolution” crowd has subsided along with the deals. If you’re wanting to join a gym and you haven’t done it yet, hang on until May or June. Many gyms will have Summer specials.
luggage
If you’re planning an upcoming vacation and need luggage, wait until next month. New styles will be coming out in preparation for the summer months. This is also when retailers will begin clearing out the old stock with pretty good discounts.
Romantic gifts
Jewelry, perfume, flowers, chocolates, etc will be in great demand prior to February 14th. Retailers know this and will capitalize on it. If you can wait until after the big day, prices should drop significantly. If you find yourself in a situation where you need gifts for the occasion and you’ve waited this long, opt for non traditional Valentine gifts, like any flowers other than roses. Or…give your sweetheart a beautiful card and tell her/him that you want them to help pick out the gift. This way the holiday is over and the prices of these items will be on the way down.
ONLY BUY IF YOU’RE ALREADY IN THE MARKET…
I’m not saying to rush out and spend money on these things because they may be on sale, but if you’re in the market for some of these items or you know you may be needing them next season anyway, President’s Day weekend is the best time to buy them at a discounted price and save some money in February.
